Quick verdict

Choose for your portions, not for the number of buttons

An air fryer is worth buying if you often cook frozen foods, vegetables, chicken, fish, or leftovers and want faster crisping without heating a full-size oven.

The smartest purchase is usually a simple model with a basket wide enough to spread food in one layer, removable parts that are easy to wash, and enough capacity for your normal meal. Extra presets rarely make food better by themselves.

Do not overpay forDozens of presets, app control, or a large capacity you will not use.
02

Capacity

Usable surface area matters more than the number on the box

A deep but narrow basket may advertise a generous volume while still forcing fries or vegetables into a thick pile. A wider basket usually makes it easier for hot air to reach more food, which improves browning and reduces the need for multiple batches.

Use the ranges below as a starting point, then compare the basket dimensions with the portions and dishes you cook most often.

Approximate sizeBest fit
2–4 qtCompact One person, snacks, sides, and limited counter space.
5–7 qtAll-rounder Couples and small families cooking a main dish or several portions.
8+ qt or dual basketLarge Bigger households, meal prep, or two foods at once; expect a larger footprint.
03

Basket style

Single, dual-zone, or oven-style?

  • Single basket: the simplest, most compact choice and usually the best value for everyday cooking.
  • Dual-zone: useful when a main dish and side need different temperatures or finish times, but it takes more counter space.
  • Oven-style: offers racks and a window for larger or flatter foods, though cleaning and even browning can require more attention.

If you normally cook one food at a time, a wide single basket is often more useful than two smaller compartments. Choose dual-zone because you will use two independent cooking zones, not because it looks more advanced.

04

Performance

Airflow and temperature control beat wattage alone

An air fryer is essentially a compact convection cooker: a heating element and fan move hot air around the food. Consistent temperature, effective airflow, and enough room around each piece have a greater effect on browning than a long list of cooking programs.

Avoid packing the basket too tightly. Shake or turn food when needed, and treat preset times as a starting point because food size, basket load, and appliance power all change the result.

05

Cleanup

The feature you will appreciate after every meal

Look for a removable crisper plate, few tight corners, and basket parts that are easy to wash. Dishwasher compatibility can help, but always follow the manual because coatings and removable components vary by model.

A window is convenient only if it stays clear and is easy to clean. Likewise, a beautiful touchscreen is less useful if grease collects around it or the controls are hard to read with wet hands.

06

Value

Which features are actually worth paying for?

  • Wide cooking area: helps food sit in a single layer and brown more evenly.
  • Dual-zone sync: valuable when you regularly cook a main and side together.
  • Easy-to-replace parts: a replacement basket or crisper plate can extend the appliance's useful life.
  • Clear manual controls: a broad temperature range and direct time control matter more than many presets.
  • Warranty and support: particularly important for an appliance that combines high heat, a fan, and electronics.

Wi-Fi, app control, and dozens of named presets are convenience extras. They can be enjoyable, but they should come after basket quality, cleaning, safety, and the right size.

07

Safety

Check the manual, the food temperature, and product recalls

Leave the ventilation space required by the manufacturer, keep the appliance on a stable heat-resistant surface, and inspect the cord, plug, handle, and basket before use. Stop using a unit that overheats, smokes unexpectedly, or has damaged parts.

The USDA advises checking food with a thermometer: poultry should reach 165°F, fish and whole cuts of beef, pork, veal, and lamb 145°F, and ground meats 160°F. Cooking time varies by appliance size and power, so color and a preset timer are not reliable safety checks.

Before buying or if you own an older model, search the CPSC recall database ↗. Air fryers have been recalled for overheating, fire, burn, and breakage hazards.

One last question

What do you cook most often?

If the answer is small batches and quick sides, choose a wide single basket. If it is a main dish plus a side at the same time, dual-zone may be worth the extra space and cost. Building a smarter kitchen too? Read our Echo Dot buying guide.
