HOW IT WORKS

A transparent estimate, not a magic number

For cloud AI, the recommendation accounts for the browser, documents, and simultaneous applications. For local models, we estimate weights using parameters × bits ÷ 8, add about 15% model overhead, and reserve memory for the operating system.

Very long contexts, multiple loaded models, and extra tools can raise usage. The recommended result is therefore rounded to memory capacities commonly sold in computers and upgrade kits.

RAM and VRAM are not interchangeable

  • RAM: memory used by the operating system, applications, and CPU-loaded models.
  • VRAM: dedicated graphics memory that determines how much of a model fits on the GPU.
  • Unified memory: on some computers, the CPU and GPU share the same pool.
  • Check the computer's memory limit, DDR4 or DDR5 type, and available slots.
